If you aren't connected to a Wi-Fi or mobile network, you can still view and edit files, including:
Google Docs
Google Sheets
Google Slides
- You must be connected to the Internet.
- Use the Google Chrome browser.(must be default)
- Don't use incognito mode.
- Install and enable Google Docs offline Chrome extension.
- Make sure you have enough free space on your device to save your files.
STEP 1 To turn on offline access:
Open Chrome. Make sure you're signed in to Chrome.
Go to drive.google.com/drive/settings
Check the box next to "Sync Google Docs, Sheets, Slides & Drawings files to this computer so that you can edit offline."
STEP 2 download and install Google Backup and Sync
Click the file in the downloads bar to install the program
Once the program is installed you may need to restart your PC.
Backup and sync will ask you to log in with your Gmail credentials
Select folders to Back UP. We recommend unchecking these folders and click OK
Make sure the Sync My Drive box is checked and click OK
The program will begin to sync the contents of you My Drive
STEP 3 open the sheet in CHROME and click the ADD TO MY DRIVE ICON
If you want to download a document that another person has shared with you, you must first add it to My drive
STEP 4 Open your Google Drive files offline
open file from the SHEETS icon on your desktop
When you reconnect to a wifi or wired network, Google Drive will automatically synchronize the updated files to the online drive.
Troubleshooting:
ISSUE: You receive a “You’re not connected to a network” message when opening Google Sheets
RESOLUTION: make Chrome your default browser (open Chrome and there should be a button at the top of the screen to Set as default- else, click ‘more options’
Scroll down to Default Browser and click Make Default
